Why is it so difficult for small and medium enterprises to access the resources they need to expand and grow their operations---why does this 'missing middle' exist in the social finance chain? We will explore these questions by outlining the characteristics of a great solution, then assess and compare up to four existing models aiming to solve the missing middle problem as presented by experienced and active doers in the field. Do the models meet the peculiar needs of impact businesses; are they self-sustaining?
